[diabetes_int] Re:was meter variability ?? about my new meter

I'm glad you posted this I have a question about a new meter I just got. I switched my supply company and they sent me a Ascencia Contour. I do believe it is nuts. A couple of days ago I started using it instead of the old meter. At first I seemed to be getting readings that were about the same as those with the old meter (OneTouch Ultra).

Then the next day after starting to use the new meter I tested 2 hours after my noon meal and got a reading of 322. I haven't gotten readings like that since starting insulin so I got out my old meter and did a test and it was about 145. Next I retested with the Ascencia and it was 175 still 20 points more. The 145 is is a pretty normal reading for me and is consistant with test I have had at the docs off right after having eating pretty much the same type of meal/food.

Then yesterday I had a reading of 272 with the new meter which is not a number I should see so I checked with the old meter and it read 145. I suspect something is wrong with this new meter.

Does anyone have an idea. Can some of the test strips in the vial be bad and others okay or the meter is whacko and I need to call and ask for a new one.

With the old meter I got consistant numbers for months and pretty much knew before I did the test what the reading would be based on what I had just eaten. But the new meter seems to give me some whacko readings.

Stacey, I have had the same experience. A 44 point variance might be
both the meter variance and a not up to par strip. The manufacturers
might think their meters are good enough, but when you use insulin and
strive for tight control, that isn't so.

Re: [diabetes_int] Degenerate cartilege-Helen's letter

The doctor could see it both with x-rays and MRIs as well as when he went
in to clean it out. After many minisectomies, he had a high tibial
osteotomy last year and the operation failed. The physical result was
perfect; however the pain got worse. In 2001, after one of the
minisectomies, the surgeon told me Joe had 85 year old knees.

Because he was just over 50, no ortho wanted to do knee replacement
surgery. Additionally, Joe was afraid of losing flexibility and being
unable to work. Well, 2003, it was so bad, he had to apply for
disability. Plus, he is taking a lot of oxycontin and this is really not
good. Finally our ortho found a specialist for him. Just google Dr.
Robert Cash, he has made the internet.

So, August 4, he had the right knee replaced and next Thursday will have
the left one done. Full recovery is supposed to take a year. However,
he can squat almost all the way down to sitting on his heels now. The
pain is less than before the surgery.

I wish metformin and alcohol would suppress my liver from dumping glucose. Whenever I drink alcohol, there is no change in my BS but YMMV.

Re: [diabetes_int] Lancet Reuse: was-cost of test strips

Well, obviously they have a vested interest in getting diabetics to not
re-use lancets.

I reuse mine until they start hurting. Months and months. Never any
infections or "breaking off," problems, either.

This site seems to have pretty good information, but I take exception to
their flat-out statement below about not reusing lancets. I suspect this
is a
concern of the legal dept's of the tester companies. After all, if they
said
reuse lancets & one person had a reaction they could be sued. In 7 1/2
years
I've only heard of one instance of suspected problems from reusing
lancets &
that was 4th hand before I heard it, so not much credibility.

One part of this statement is "somewhat true". After 3-6 months of using
the
same lancet (5x/day) there is slight pain & that's how I know to change
it!
IMHO, suggesting that there will be increased pain after a single use is
patently baloney & irresponsible.

Hi Linda

Thanks for an excellent report on Red Yeast Rice (RYR). It caught my
interest because I have experimented, unsuccessfully, with other
non-statin ways to reduce my LDL and I always had to return to
lipitor20mg. However, I was ignorant of RYR and I will probably try it
now.

Therefore, I did a little further searching on Highwire and Scholar
after reading your report and found that there are a surprising number
of medical research studies on it. Lots more to read, so little time:-)

Those interested may find this letter worth reading in full. It is a
commentary on a paper presented to AJCN in 2000, and gives a good
overview of the subject with some further references. It also comments
on CoQ10:
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 71, No. 1, 152, January 2000
Letters to the Editor
More on the Chinese red-yeast-rice supplement and its
cholesterol-lowering effect
http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/71/1/152

Linda, you noted that your source is "prescription quality". I hope
that you are right, because one of the biggest problems with
unregulated supplements is consistency and quality. This report
explains why:

An Analysis of Nine Proprietary Chinese Red Yeast Rice Dietary
Supplements: Implications of Variability in Chemical Profile and Contents
http://www.liebertonline.com/doi/abs/10.1089%2F107555301750164181?cookieSet=1
Design: Monacolins were measured by high performance liquid
chromatography (HPLC) that separates the various monacolins in Chinese
red yeast rice. Citrinin concentration, a toxic fermentation
byproduct, was measured by radioimmunoassay.

Results: Total monacolin content varied from 0% to 0.58% w/w and only
1 of 9 preparations had the full complement of 10 monacolin compounds.
Citrinin was found at measurable concentrations in 7 of the 9
preparations.

Conclusions: The findings from clinical trials demonstrating
significant and clinically relevant cholesterol reduction using a
defined Chinese red yeast rice preparation containing 10 different
monacolins cannot be generalized to preparations that do not contain
the same levels and profile of monacolins.

Finally, one of the possible side-effects of statins that cause people
to look at alternatives is rhabdomyolysis. Unfortunately, going to RYR
may not avoid that. This is only a single report, but it may bear
further investigation: http://tinyurl.com/7fode or

Rhabdomyolysis is a known complication of hepatic 3-methylglutaryl
coenzyme A reductase (HMG-CoA) inhibitor (statin) therapy for
posttransplant hyperlipidemia, and thus monitoring for this effect is
indicated. We report a case of an herbal preparation-induced
rhabdomyolysis in a stable renal-transplant recipient, attributed to
the presence of red yeast rice (Monascus purpureus) within the
mixture. The condition resolved when consumption of the product
ceased. Rice fermented with red yeast contains several types of
mevinic acids, including monacolin K, which is identical to
lovastatin. We postulate that the interaction of cyclosporine and
these compounds through the cytochrome P450 system resulted in the
adverse effect seen in this patient. Transplant recipients must be
cautioned against using herbal preparations to lower their lipid
levels to prevent such complications from occurring.

Re: [diabetes_int] Re: For Newbies - Having Fun With Diabetes

I see your point, Alan, and I'll read that again with your ideas in
mind. What I'm trying to convey to people is that carbs are present in
ANY product grown from earth and water. An awful lot of people we hear
from don't seem to know that. I also strongly recommend the use of a
carb counter so folks can look up their favorites for themselves and
decide whether to retain those foods in their meals. And yes, sorry,
coffee has carbs. If you drink as much as I do, and try to do an Atkins
induction you have to count them.

Crying in the wilderness is easier, however, when we know that we've got
some support - like this list, and a few books out there. We can't
change the establishment way of dealing with this disease overnight, and
most likely can't convince very many doctors to change their ways. All
we can do is try to capture (with kindness) as many newbies as we can on
a daily basis and attempt to get them to try, just try, a different
way... just for a little while, just to see if it will help them to
handle their bg numbers better. Trying to change the whole world all at
once is a very stressful ambition - it raises OUR numbers. Therefore,
to me at least, it isn't worth it.

Hi Jo

have another look at that. The sachet is 16g. If you add up the gms
for fat, carbs, etc they come to 14.19. Those percentages are probably
RDA, not percentage of the sachet.

So, in your 8 fl oz (that's only an average-to-small glass) you have
8gms of carb, mainly sugar. Whether you call that low or high depends
on your point of reference, but it's too high for me as a drink.

I presume "Swiss Miss" was the cocoa, if so it is a higher carb load
than I was using; the powdered milk also adds to that in that recipe.

Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia

[diabetes_int] Need for frequent testing ... proof needed

Hi Sky and others,

I understand the frustration. Just last week I had a checkup with my
primary care physician and I said I needed more testing supplies. She said
that I had good control (A1C dropped from 6.0 to 5.9). When asked how often
I tested I said 5-6 times a day. She said I tested too much.

I asked on a group (I think not this group) for some references to show the
doctor, some authorities to quote about the need for frequent testing. I
didn't get anything, so I went without the evidence I wanted.

So, if my contol is good (based on my A1C) do I need to worry about it?
I've read on many occasions that it is bad to have extreme peaks in BG
readings, but that doesn't bother my doctor. Is she right? Obviously, I
can't print out quotes from Yahoo groups to show my doctor that I need
tighter control to avoid peaks. She would laugh at me, and rightfully so.

My challenge is for anyone to give me some solid references I can print out
and show my doctor. Do any authorities warn about the dangers of having
peak readings? My doctor is convinced that reasonable A1C readings tell the
whole story, and maybe she's right. It seems obvious to me that having
large BG readings at any time is bad, but I am not medically trained and may
just be mistaken.

If it is bad to have spikes in BG readings, then some medical authorities
surely say this. If not, perhaps it is just an urban legion promoted in the
Groups. I would like to say this and the other groups are great. I've
learned a lot, and I believe it when people warn me I need to test
frequently to avoid spikes. But I would like some tangible evidence to
clinch it and to prove to my doctor that I'm not just being paranoid with my
frequent testing.

Can anyone here help? Does the ADA web site or any other recognized
authority confirm that we should be testing frequently to avoid spikes in
our BG readings? I think this would prove useful to all of us trying to
convince our doctors to write prescriptions for adequate testing supplies
... if it is indeed true.

[diabetes_int] Rosedale Diet book, Avandia, fat cells

I just finished reading the Rosedale Diet, and was disturbed by a
comment made about Avandia. The author claimed that Avandia cleared
blood sugar not by increasing insulin sensitivity, as was claimed, but
by stuffing it into new fat cells. If this is true, it would be well
nigh impossible to lose weight on Avandia, and inevitable to gain weight.

Googling led me to some medical abstracts that talked about Avandia and
differentiated adipocytes. Do adipocytes (fat cells) exist in a
potential (undifferentiated) form and then get differentiated into
active fat cells?

Avandia helps me keep my HbA1c in the 5.0-5.5 range, but I've also grown
even fatter since starting it a couple years ago.

Can anybody shed some light on this for me? It would be much appreciated.
